Bio

Paul Carter is a metalsmith with a respect for materials and processes. Carter was born and raised in East Tennessee. After a STEM-focused high school experience, Carter entered Tennessee Tech University’s Electrical Engineering program with the delusion it would be quite hands-on. After a semester of tedious computer work, Carter realized he was in the wrong field of study. He began a search for interests that led him to TN Tech’s Fine Arts program through The Appalachian Center for Crafts. Connecting with materials, processes, and people of the Craft Center, Carter began defining himself as an artist and metalsmith.

Currently a senior working towards his BFA in Metals, Carter has become proficient in forging, small scale casting, welding, and fabrication. Although he often creates functional work, Carter’s current practice is focused on the fabrication of sculptural objects which intrigue through texture and form. Most of the time Carter can be found at the Appalachian Center for Craft creating or contemplating his senior thesis.
